Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently wager against one another. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
