Stu Ungar

[ English ]

The main reason for why Stu changed from gin to poker was that Stu was a tiny bit too skilled at it. So skilled in fact, that no player could stand up to him. Even the commonly called champions who were meant to be the greatest at gin were decimated when they competed against Stu Ungar. One of these gin rummy masters was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Harry Stein was handed such a crushing blow at the hands of mr. ungar that he allegedly quit competing in it professionally and never showed up at a gin rummy tournament.

Of course, with a reputation like that it was not too long before everyone became weary of competing against Stu Ungar. He could find no games and in his desperation he began doing something no one had done before. Stu presented beginning handicaps to potential competitors with the wish that they might compete opposed to him if they thought they had an advantage. He at will began from a disadvantageous position and one account has it that stu even played against a regular cheater. Amid the match, he received advice that the cheater was at it again but mr. ungar stated that he knew of the cheating and he would still win, which he did, of course.

The same problem followed Stu Ungar into sin city. He won so much that the poker rooms started asking him not to compete on their respective premises anymore. The explanation why was that other poker room clientele refused to sit at the table if he were playing.

Stu Ungar is recollected better for his abilities in holdem poker but he himself always said that he was a whole lot better at gin rummy.

He beat Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in 1980 and became the youngest world camp. Due to his looks that made him appear far younger than he actually was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
