Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
